On a wild, wet and muddy weekend, the scouts from St Patrick’s Galway battled the elements and fellow scouters from 100 teams to come away with a fifth place overall in the National Campcraft Challenge whilst also being awarded a Gold Standard for their efforts at ‘The Phoenix’ which took place in Mount Melleray Scout Centre from 18th – 21st August.

The patrol of 8 scouts from Galway had been in training the past few months in preparation for the weekend which tested many areas, from campcraft to cooking, as well as the various skills and knowledge that were put to the test over the 4 day weekend competition.

From setting up and maintaining their site to partaking in a reconnaissance mission zone where Scouts practised strategy building, drawing line maps and bunkers, developing their observation skills and learning more about the science of velocity. They had to work closely as a team, building a ballista, communicating using semaphore and breaking a series of codes as well as carrying out first aid tasks calling on their knowledge and skills in dealing with emergencies whilst out hill walking or camping.

Speaking after the event Group Leader Michelle Murphy said ‘She was delighted with the result and very proud of the scouts.  The patrol had worked hard over the Summer months along with their leaders and this result was a testament to the teamwork, commitment and dedication by the scouts themselves their, leaders and parents in finishing so high in the competition’

The scouts will resume their weekly meetings in October in Shantalla Hall on Friday evenings, next year they will celebrate 40 years in Galway, with 80 members and 20 leaders the group continues to go from strength to strength.
