Scouts work to save lives
In Ireland 2% of youths suffer from an undetected heart condition that may cause Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA), which strikes with no warning and no pattern. There’s little time to react and even less time to think as SCA can happen to anyone, at anytime, regardless of age, gender or fitness. That’s why 5,000 people in Ireland die each year due to SCA.
Safety, emergency preparedness and first aid are key lifesaving skills known by every scout. Scouting Ireland now has an initiative to raise awareness of SCA to also make every scout group and facility in Ireland heart safe.
As part of this initiative, Irish-based HeartSine® has teamed with Scouting Ireland and HeartSafety Solutions to provide customised rescue kits, along with CPR and AED training, to scouting groups
While SCA can’t always be prevented, immediate access to an AED can increase the chance of survival by up to 75%, especially when scouts are in remote areas where access to emergency services is often limited
With its easy to follow visual and audible prompts, HeartSine’s samaritan PAD guides the rescuer through all the steps in the rescue process making it simple to use for even novice rescuers. And thankfully, Ireland’s "Good Samaritan" law enacted in 2011 allows rescuers to take action to prevent the unnecessary loss of a precious life without fear of litigation or liability.
